Cera Sanitaryware Ltd (BOM:532443) reported a robust 19% revenue growth in Q1 FY 2027, driven by strong demand in its sanitaryware and faucetware segments, despite a temporary dilution in EBITDA margins to 10.1% due to one-time operational factors.
Understanding the Margin Dilution
Deepak Chaudhary, VP of Finance and Investor Relations, clarified that the Q1 margin of 10.1% was impacted by several transitional factors totaling approximately 4.35% of revenue. These included a one-time INR 6.3 crore provision for a long-term worker settlement (1.3%), under-absorption of fixed costs due to running a single kiln (0.75%), accelerated closure of legacy project orders at lower prices (0.8%), and the delayed impact of price hikes (1.5%). Excluding these items, the underlying EBITDA margin would have reached 14.5%. Management remains confident in its FY 2027 EBITDA margin guidance of 13.5%-14%, expecting a recovery starting in Q2.
Growth Drivers: Volume vs. Price
CFO Vikas Kothari provided a granular breakdown of the company’s growth. In the sanitaryware segment, the 14% revenue increase was fueled by 10% volume growth, 2% from pricing, and a 2% favorable product mix. The faucetware segment saw a 25% revenue surge, propelled by 18% volume growth, 4% price impact, and 3% favorable mix. This volume-led expansion underscores a strengthening demand environment.
Labor Costs and Strategic Adjustments
The company finalized a new four-year wage agreement effective retrospectively from September 2025. The total incremental wage cost for FY 2027 is projected at INR 18.3 crores, with total staff costs expected to reach approximately INR 300 crores. Regarding brand leadership, the recent resignation of the head of Sanitare and Polyplus is being managed through a succession plan, with no impact on the execution of long-term targets for these new initiatives.
Operational Strategy: Internalization and Input Costs
Responding to concerns about the internalization of outsourced SKUs, management noted this is an operational necessity rather than a strategic shift. Cera continues to manufacture complex SKUs in-house while outsourcing simpler ones, though recent supply chain challenges in the Morbi cluster prompted a temporary shift. Furthermore, while brass prices have hit record highs, the company has implemented a cumulative 16% price increase in the faucetware segment. Gross margins are projected to recover to historical levels of 51% by Q3, provided input costs stabilize.
Expansion Plans and Financial Reporting
The company is currently reviewing the revival of its greenfield sanitaryware project, with a decision expected by the end of FY 2027. Meanwhile, the faucetware brownfield expansion remains on schedule for Q4 FY 2027, with current utilization at 96%. Additionally, Cera has updated its revenue reporting to comply with Ind AS requirements, now reflecting turnover discounts as a deduction from revenue. This change has no impact on absolute profitability or cash flows.
Marketing Investment
Cera maintains a strong commitment to brand visibility, with an advertising and promotional budget of approximately INR 85 crores for FY 2027. This includes the rollout of the “Your Moment of Cera” campaign, featuring brand ambassador Kriti Sanon.
