Russell Wilson, the billionaire founder of major Australian cryptocurrency exchange CoinSpot, has launched a lawsuit against a former staff member for the alleged theft of nearly $500,000. The legal action, reported on August 10, follows an internal investigation into the misappropriation of company funds.
The Allegations Against Iresh Pawan Perera
Court documents filed by Casey Block Services, the parent company of CoinSpot, allege that Iresh Pawan Perera—a former member of the customer support team—systematically embezzled funds from the exchange. The claim asserts that Perera moved approximately $478,932 into his personal bank account across 76 separate transactions over a two-year period ending in March.
The lawsuit details that Perera allegedly converted CoinSpot’s digital assets into cash for his personal use. Following the discovery of these activities, his employment was terminated on March 9 for what the company described as “material breaches” of his employment contract. As of the latest update, Perera has not yet filed a formal defense in response to the allegations.
Financial Stakes and Legal Proceedings
CoinSpot, which was founded in 2013 and recently posted a $270 million net profit for the 2025 financial year, is seeking to recover the full amount of $478,932 plus interest. The legal proceedings are scheduled to resume this September.
A spokesperson for CoinSpot confirmed the existence of the legal battle but stated that the company is unable to provide further details while the matter remains sub judice.
