Why AMD Stock Plunged 18% in July: AI Hype Meets Reality

Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) saw its shares plummet 18% throughout July, driven by a sector-wide semiconductor sell-off fueled by growing investor anxiety regarding AI overspending.

The AI Spending Backlash

The tech sector faced a difficult month as concerns mounted that artificial intelligence companies are pouring excessive capital into infrastructure without a clear path to return on investment (ROI). With tech giants projected to spend $750 billion on capital expenditures this year—much of it dedicated to AI—any potential pullback in this spending spree poses a direct threat to AMD and its industry peers, who have flourished under the recent surge in demand.

Market Sentiment and Competition

The broader semiconductor industry suffered significantly in July, with 20 of the world’s largest chipmakers shedding a collective $1 trillion in market capitalization. Adding to the pressure on AMD was a report indicating that the China-based AI developer DeepSeek is actively designing its own artificial intelligence processor. While this move may not immediately impact AMD’s current operations, investors interpreted the news as a signal of intensifying competition in the chip space.

High Stakes and Elevated Expectations

AMD’s own internal investments remain aggressive, with research and development (R&D) costs reaching $1.2 billion in the first half of this year—a 142% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

When the company released its second-quarter results in early August, it reported earnings per share of $1.66, surpassing the Wall Street consensus of $1.62, and revenue of $11.55 billion, which beat the expected $11.28 billion. Despite these strong numbers, shares slipped further as investors had priced in exceptionally high growth expectations.

Valuation and Future Volatility

AMD currently trades at a trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 123, a significant premium compared to the tech sector average of 35. This valuation implies that investors demand near-perfect execution and consistent growth to justify the stock price.

Given the current recalibration of expectations surrounding AI-linked equities, shareholders should prepare for continued volatility in the short term as the market adjusts to the realities of the semiconductor landscape.
