Trump Media & Technology Group (NASDAQ: DJT) shares tumbled 9.4% by 3:20 p.m. ET on Monday, significantly underperforming the S&P 500, which remained largely flat, and the Nasdaq Composite, which saw a minor 0.3% dip.
The Collapse of the Crypto Partnership
The downward pressure on the Truth Social operator follows the company’s decision to terminate the majority of its partnership with the crypto exchange Crypto.com. The original agreement, established on August 7, involved Trump Media, Crypto.com, and Yorkville Acquisition Corp.—a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). The trio had initially planned to launch a publicly traded digital-asset treasury company (DAT) focused on acquiring and holding Cronos (CRYPTO: CRO), the native token of Crypto.com.
Why the Deal Fell Through
Economic feasibility drove the decision to scrap the project. When the partnership was first announced last August, Cronos was trading near $0.20. Since then, the token’s value has cratered to approximately $0.047. With the math no longer supporting the viability of the DAT, the parties opted to dissolve the deal entirely.
Financial Fallout and Strategic Pivot
Despite walking away from the partnership, Trump Media continues to hold the CRO tokens purchased in anticipation of the deal, alongside other digital assets such as Bitcoin. Consequently, the company has been forced to recognize significant paper losses as the valuation of these assets plummeted.
Following this failed foray into the cryptocurrency sector, Trump Media has pivoted back to its core operations. Management stated that the company is refocusing its efforts on Truth Social revenue generation and the finalization of a proposed merger with a nuclear fusion technology firm.
The Financial Snapshot
The company’s underlying financials remain a point of contention for many investors. Over the trailing twelve-month period, Trump Media has reported losses exceeding $530 million against a backdrop of just $3.7 million in revenue. Nevertheless, the company maintains a market capitalization currently valued at over $2.8 billion.
