Mesa Laboratories (NASDAQ:MLAB) reported a 1% revenue increase to $60.1 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, as newly appointed CEO Siddhartha Kadia prioritized operational execution, debt reduction, and resolving fulfillment bottlenecks in its Sterilization and Disinfection Control (SDC) division.
Operational Efficiency and Financial Performance
During his first earnings call as CEO, Kadia emphasized that Mesa possesses durable, regulation-embedded franchises with significant earnings power that have been hampered by fixable execution challenges. CFO John Sakys reported that core organic growth stood at 0.4%, excluding a 60-basis-point currency benefit. Gross profit margins saw a notable expansion to 64.9%, up from 62% in the prior-year period, driven by lower third-party consulting costs and supply-chain efficiencies.
The company demonstrated strong cost discipline, with operating expenses falling 5.6% to $32 million. While GAAP net income dipped to $2.8 million—largely due to non-operating foreign-currency fluctuations—adjusted operating income climbed 16.5% to $15 million. Cash flow from operations surged to $14.7 million, allowing the firm to repay $8.7 million in debt and reduce net leverage to 1.85 times, with a target of 1.5 to 1.75 times by the end of fiscal 2027.
Addressing SDC Fulfillment Challenges
The Sterilization and Disinfection Control (SDC) segment, which accounts for 41% of total revenue, saw a 3.6% organic decline to $24.5 million. Kadia clarified that this drop was not a result of waning demand, but rather a failure to meet delivery reliability standards. “The problem is that we missed delivery dates on orders we already hold,” Kadia stated, emphasizing a commitment to “promise-keeping.” The company has tasked its senior vice president of operations with streamlining cycle times while maintaining strict quality release standards.
Strategic Shifts in Biopharma and R&D
The Biopharmaceutical Development (BPD) segment posted 5% organic growth to $12.1 million. To sustain this momentum, Mesa has appointed a new general manager and is currently rebuilding its sales processes and pipeline discipline. Furthermore, the company has reprioritized its R&D efforts to accelerate the launch of its next-generation Gyrolab automated immunoassay platform, now slated for fiscal 2028.
Market Outlook and Future Guidance
Other segments showed mixed results, with Calibration Solutions growing 7.6% organically to $13.3 million, while Clinical Genomics remained flat at $10.3 million. Regional performance in China saw a 7% decline, though Mesa’s exposure to the region has been reduced to under $3.5 million.
Kadia noted that the company will provide full-year fiscal 2027 guidance alongside its second-quarter results in November. The current corporate strategy focuses on internal resource allocation toward high-return business units rather than aggressive M&A activity, with potential for only minor, strategic “tuck-in” acquisitions later in the fiscal year.
