OpenAI announced on Monday the launch of a new premium tier for ChatGPT Business, a strategic move designed to scale revenue streams as the company prepares for its anticipated initial public offering (IPO).
Scaling Up: The New Premium Tier
In an official update, OpenAI detailed that the premium service is specifically tailored for “power users,” providing five times the usage capacity compared to its standard ChatGPT Business offerings.
The pricing structure for this high-capacity plan is set at $125 per user per month, with a discounted rate of $100 per user per month when billed annually. For comparison, the standard business plan remains priced at $25 per user per month, or $20 on an annual billing cycle.
The Competitive Landscape
OpenAI’s expansion into the enterprise sector is a direct effort to maintain momentum against rival Anthropic, which currently charges identical prices for its own Teams plans. The race to dominate the corporate AI market has intensified as both companies seek to diversify revenue beyond consumer-facing products.
While OpenAI secured an early advantage in the AI sector with the November 2022 release of ChatGPT, competitors like Anthropic and Google have rapidly developed models that frequently match or outperform OpenAI’s capabilities.
Market Valuation and IPO Timelines
Anthropic has gained significant traction with corporate clients, particularly through its Claude Code AI platform. This success has contributed to a post-money valuation of $965 billion as of May, surpassing OpenAI’s $852 billion valuation recorded in March. Both firms are aggressively pushing productivity tools; Anthropic debuted “Claude Cowork” in January, while OpenAI launched “ChatGPT Work” in July.
These service expansions are central to the companies’ financial preparations for going public. Both firms filed confidential S-1 paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June. While market analysts expect Anthropic to launch its IPO as early as this fall, reports from the New York Times in June suggest OpenAI may hold off on its own public offering until 2027.
