Bitfinex Hacker Ilya Lichtenstein Released Early, Thanks Trump

Ilya Lichtenstein, who confessed to money laundering in connection with the infamous hack of the crypto exchange Bitfinex, has reportedly been granted an early release from prison.

In a post on X Thursday evening, Lichtenstein expressed gratitude for his early release, attributing it to President Trump’s First Step Act, a significant prison reform initiative introduced during Trump’s presidency.

Positive Outlook After Release

“I remain committed to making a positive impact in cybersecurity as soon as I can,” Lichtenstein stated. “To the supporters, thank you for everything. To the haters, I look forward to proving you wrong.”

Background on the Case

The Department of Justice apprehended Lichtenstein alongside his wife, Heather Morgan, in 2022, managing to seize approximately $3.6 billion in bitcoins that had been stolen from Bitfinex. Their notoriety grew after the arrest, culminating in their feature in a Netflix documentary titled “Biggest Heist Ever.”

Sentencing and Current Status

Lichtenstein eventually acknowledged his involvement in the cybercrime and was sentenced to five years in prison.

Uncertainty Surrounding the Release

It remains unclear whether the Trump administration directly influenced Lichtenstein’s release. A spokesperson from the administration informed CNBC that Lichtenstein “has served significant time on his sentence and is currently on home confinement consistent with statute and Bureau of Prisons policies.”
