Spider-Man Blockbuster Fuels Record-Breaking AMC Comeback

AMC Theatres achieved its most profitable weekend in 106 years between July 29 and August 2, driven by the massive debut of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which propelled ticket and concession sales to all-time highs.

A Historic Surge in Attendance

For a cinema giant long plagued by bankruptcy speculation and heavy debt, this performance serves as a critical indicator of potential recovery. During this five-day window, over 10.2 million moviegoers visited AMC and its European subsidiary, ODEON. This surge resulted in record-breaking admissions and food and beverage revenue for the chain.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” acted as the primary catalyst, grossing $355 million domestically and $927 million globally. According to CNBC, this marks the second-largest opening weekend in history, trailing only Disney’s 2019 “Avengers: Endgame,” which earned $357 million domestically.

“It is a powerful and unmistakable reminder that audiences overwhelmingly embrace the theatrical experience when studios release films that audiences want to see and support them with strong marketing campaigns,” the company stated.

Beyond the Web-Slinger: The IMAX Effect

The success was not limited to the new Spider-Man release. Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” continued to draw massive crowds weeks after its premiere. AMC’s Lincoln Square 13 location in New York maintained 24/7 IMAX 70mm screenings for three consecutive weeks.

According to an AMC statement on July 27, “The Odyssey” generated the highest IMAX revenue in the company’s history for a film’s first two weekends. With showtimes sold out through mid-August, AMC confirmed it is collaborating with Universal Pictures and IMAX to increase capacity. This dual-hit strategy—superhero blockbusters on standard screens paired with prestige epics in IMAX—has allowed AMC to achieve near-total capacity across its various formats.

Financial Health: Fact vs. Fiction

The box office momentum is clearly reflected in the company’s financial reporting. CFO Sean Goodman confirmed that the quarter saw the highest revenue and adjusted EBITDA in AMC’s history, noting, “We did not simply benefit from a stronger industry box office, we outperformed.”

Crucially, operating cash flow turned positive, reaching $218.7 million over the trailing twelve months—a significant recovery from the negative figures reported in 2022 and 2023. Additionally, cash on hand rose to $778.4 million, up from $428.5 million at the end of 2025.

The Road to Full Recovery

Despite the positive trajectory, the balance sheet remains complex. While management has leveraged strong quarters to refinance debt and extend maturities to 2029, the company acknowledges it has not yet reached its target leverage ratio of 3x.

Regarding the decision to issue new shares to raise capital, management was clear: “The alternative to not repaying that debt would have been catastrophic,” citing a $125.5 million debt obligation. With over $7 billion in debt and negative shareholders’ equity, AMC faces a long road ahead.

For investors, the immediate future hinges on consistent box office performance, with highly anticipated releases like “Dune: Part Three” and “Avengers: Doomsday” scheduled to hit theaters before the end of the year.
