Tech Stocks Defy AI Spending Fears With Record Inflows

Tech stocks are maintaining their dominance on Wall Street, attracting a projected $216 billion in annual inflows despite recent market volatility sparked by concerns over heavy capital expenditure at tech giants like Meta (META), Alphabet (GOOG), and Amazon (AMZN).

Record-Breaking Capital Inflows

According to the latest data from Bank of America Global Research, the tech sector is currently on pace for a record-breaking year. The projected $216 billion in inflows significantly outpaces the total annual figures recorded for the sector in every year dating back to 2015.

Valuation Premiums and Growth Potential

The persistent investor appetite for technology is reflected in current market valuations. Data from Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace indicates that the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) is trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of approximately 26 times, notably higher than the 20.4 times seen for the S&P 500 (^GSPC). This premium valuation highlights the sector’s aggressive growth trajectory, a primary driver for why investors continue to maintain overweight positions in tech.

Wall Street Signals Long-Term Confidence

While the market has grappled with jitters surrounding AI-related spending, Bank of America’s inflow data suggests that institutional confidence remains unshaken. Analysts argue that the long-term outlook for the sector is bolstered by tangible evidence of AI profitability.

“AI monetization is increasingly visible through backlog and cloud revenues. As elevated backlogs convert into recognized revenue, cloud growth should remain well supported, helping validate rising AI capex, strengthen order coverage, and further ease return on invested capital concerns,” JPMorgan strategist Dubravko Lakos-Bujas noted on Monday.

This underlying optimism regarding technology’s growth potential was a central factor in Lakos-Bujas’ decision to raise his S&P 500 price target from 7,800 to 8,000.
