Lindian Resources Ltd (ASX:LIN, OTC:LINIF) officially confirmed that its Kangankunde Rare Earths Project in Malawi holds a valid mining licence, following a formal investigation by the Malawian government that found zero evidence of unauthorized extraction or illegal activity.
Malawi Government Rejects Allegations
The clarification comes in response to recent media scrutiny, which prompted an official address in the Malawi National Assembly on August 7, 2026. The government confirmed that Lindian’s local subsidiary, Rift Valley Resource Developments Ltd, remains the lawful owner of mining licence MML0290/22, which is currently in good standing.
During the parliamentary session, Malawi’s Minister of Mining explicitly stated that inspections revealed no signs of illicit mining. Furthermore, the Minister verified that all mineral samples exported from the country were processed with the necessary clearances for laboratory testing, technical assessment, and scientific beneficiation.
Operational Compliance and Strategy
Lindian emphasized that its Kangankunde operations strictly adhere to statutory thresholds regarding workforce, material movement, and capital expenditure. The project also maintains a fully approved Environmental and Social Impact Assessment from the Malawi Environment Protection Authority.
Regarding national export policies, the company reaffirmed its commitment to in-country beneficiation. Rather than exporting raw minerals, the project is designed to process ore into high-grade monazite concentrate directly within Malawi.
Integration and Future Outlook
As the company moves toward a Stage 2 final investment decision, it has recently secured full ownership of the SARECO mixed rare earths carbonate (MREC) processing facility in Kazakhstan. This move grants Lindian complete operational and marketing control, bolstering its goal of creating an integrated rare earths supply chain.
Executive chairman Robert Martin welcomed the government’s statement and reiterated the company’s primary objective: achieving first production by Q4 2026.
“Kangankunde continues to be developed under a valid mining licence in good standing,” Martin stated. He confirmed that the company remains in active, positive dialogue with the Ministry regarding licensing requirements for future expansion.
Project Status and Funding
Lindian is not aware of any outstanding issues from recent media or parliamentary reports that would materially impact the project’s validity or operational capacity. Kangankunde remains the company’s cornerstone asset, with a target of producing a premium monazite concentrate grading 55% total rare earth oxides.
Construction of Stage 1 is currently well advanced. The project is fully funded, supported by a long-term strategic partnership with Iluka Resources and institutional capital raisings that totaled A$191.5 million. Lindian continues to prioritize the construction timeline while maintaining transparent engagement with Malawian authorities.
